LIFE IS A CURVEBALL!

If you had asked me six years ago whether I thought this is where I would be.....I would have answered no.

My passion began with a window, that window then turned out to be a passion for problem solving. Architecture is a response to a problem which is shaped by our past interactions and experiences, so what type of architect do I want to be?.....I don't know

Who am I?
I am a forward thinking, innovative problem solver who expresses these answers in the form of design.

I am Anzabeen Ahmed, a 19 year old Bangladeshi girl thriving to be one of the greatest architects in the world. I have always found the hard work and dedication that architects have to show to complete a single piece of work very fascinating. Moreover, I believe that the world needs architects to design eco-friendly sustainable living spaces. Therefore, I have chosen to study Diploma of Design and Architecture at UTS Insearch leading to Bachelor of Design in Architecture at UTS.

From a young age I grew up watching my Dad in his line of work as a builder, from looking at the plans for his projects to walking through the sites at all stages of development. I had not originally had the idea of becoming an architect once finishing school but it quickly became something I wanted to do. I have hopes of being able to create world renowned spaces whilst at the same time being able to create more simplistic and small scale projects including residential. Architecture is a way to express and create my own ideas and individuality and I intend to create spaces that reflect this. I have aspirations of opening my own firm which will focus on an incorporation of the natural landscape.

I have been fascinated and excited by architecture for as long as I can remember. From creating and building spaces for my toys as a kid, to doing work experience in an architecture firm during high school, it has always been of great interest to me. During this course I have discovered that architecture is a great way to find inspiration, express my ideas and establish my individuality. Having now almost completed the Diploma of Design and Architecture at Insearch, I am certain that this has been the right choice for me.
My name is Emily and I am a 21 year old architecture student. Throughout my school years I was always indecisive when it came to my future career. This lead to many declarations to my family, ones such as “I will open a farm and breed horses!” or “I’ll train as a midwife and move to London”. Only after studying nursing for a while I realised that looking after people was not for me. This lead me to search for alternate options and I found UTS Insearch and their diploma of Architecture. At first I wasn’t sure that the career was for me, but over the last three semesters I have found a love for the subjects and through research a passion for the career and its many branches. I finally know what I want to be when I grow up.

My name is Felix, I am a 19 year old Indonesian architecture student at University of Technology Sydney. Since I was a kid, I have always loved drawing and painting so I started to make something unique and I was thinking, 'why don’t I make something uniquely big'. That is when my interest in architecture started to grow. I want to be an international architect like Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry as well. It will be hard but I always remember a quote from Deddy Corbuzier, “If you want to be success, learn from your rival”.

My dream is to become an architect. What type of architect? I’m still unsure. I want to gather excessive knowledge throughout my years both in and out of university and decide on the type of architect I want to become after gathering enough experience and knowledge from classmates, professors, inspirational architectural figures and all sources that may aid in enhancing my abilities to become an architect. At this point of my studies I have come to realise I am a simplistic thinker that has yet to expand on his creativity in which can only be unlocked through surrounding experiences including interactions with classmates, professors, exhibitions, fellow architects and other elements that will help unlock my creativity into architecture.

My name is Isabel Andia, I am 19 years old. I live in the Northern beaches of Sydney. I have always had a strong connection to the ocean/beach. During my years of high school I have always loved art and design technology subjects. My last two years of schooling I became interested in interior design and architecture. I also became interested in Ancient History, specifically Ancient Greece and Rome, this influenced my decision to choose architecture, as the Greeks/Romans have set the foundations of architecture today.  I have always loved making, creating and problem solving. My connection to the beach, has influenced the way I see architecture, as I would like people to maintain a connection to nature. I have been inspired by female architects such as Elizabeth Diller, Zaha Hadid and Momoyo Kaijima. My dream is to one day create my own house with views of the the ocean.

I am a young motivated individual who has always strived to become an architect from a young age as I enjoy designing and connecting different materials to see what works together. Whenever I design a building I always ensure that the structure has meaning and value both, to the user and to the surrounding environment. A big inspiration of mine who I have recently studied would have to be Daniel Libeskind and his team where all their buildings have a dynamic, contemporary feel and yet the functionality is increased for the user by also complimenting the society around it.

My name is Mariam Yaqow and I am 18 years old. So far, I can say that choosing to do architecture has felt like the right way to go with my life, from the little spark of ideas to the major design processes, it surely is worth it. Growing up I have always challenged myself to strive for better and work harder because the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction received when you achieve your goals is extraordinary, to me at least. It is this specific emotion that motivates me and pushes me to always aim higher. What brought me to architecture was my interest in creative design but also in physics and engineering, therefore architecture was the right combination of the two. You can receive happiness when you feel like your ideas matter or help other people so why not receive it while doing what you enjoy the most?

Since I was a child, I loved playing with Legos and building shapes that were not what I saw in the streets. As I grew up, Zaha Hadid became my idol, since she reflected both power and strength. Hadid’s approach to lines and curves to design a dynamic and interactive space made me want to develop a new way of seeing architecture.

Architecture is a powerful mean of expression. Architects design in terms of the feelings the building needs to convey to the individuals. We have the ability to turn people's wishes into reality by imagining the future. While designing by thinking outside the box and further developing the standard aspects of architecture, we are able to embody our personality in our designs and express our passion for architecture.

My name is Nelita, I'm 20 years young and a university student studying architecture in Sydney. I was born in Darwin, Australia although I am also part Indonesian. My interest in architecture started from watching the tv program called Grand Designs UK but I was also inspired by my dad who is a professional architectural photographer. My mum also inspired me as she has a great sense of design and from then I got inspired to explore my creativity and aspire to become a successful designer as well as architect in the future.
pranisha1 2.jpg

Pranisha Rai is a Design and Architecture student. Her love for structure and how they are made started developing when her middle school art teacher taught her simple perspective drawings. While children her age liked watching cartoons, she was keen on flipping through the beautiful images of houses on architectural magazines. Studying something she always had a passion for seemed thrilling and she was grateful for having parents who supported her decisions.

In terms of her design position, she takes inspirations from people, different cultures, religions and psychological mannerism of human beings. She strongly believes that architecture is not only about shelter and structure it is more than that, it is the symbol of pride and power and evocation of different emotions.

My name is Raden. I am 19 years old and I was born in Perth, Australia. Currently I am studying architecture at university in Sydney. I have a mixed heritage - Australian/Indonesian. The reason I chose to study architecture was from watching tv programs such as Grand Designs and Best Homes Australia, which made me become more interested in this field. Also, my dad, who is a professional architectural photographer, and my mum, who has an awesome sense of design, inspired and continues to inspire me in my creativity. In the near future, I hope to work in an architecture firm and be part of projects where I can display my ideas and designs.

As a child I was drawn to drawing in my freetime. Where living in a house in Sydney suburbia without cable TV and still being connected to the world of games via slow dial-up connections in the early 00’s allowed me to become productive with A3 sheets of paper and a pencil and started drawing the spatial arrangement of my own home (in other words, I drew plans) and perspectives of my hometown of Arncliffe. My obsession with my ‘Thomas The Tank Engine’ set allowed me to recreate track networks that spanned from one end of the house to the other leaving my parents slightly annoyed. This led me to believe that I wanted to become a train driver, but with further self research it gave me an understanding of the connection between my drawings and envisioning different network connections for my train sets and the fact that my grandfather kept mentioning to me “Should become an Arjiteck or Town Planner”. So therefore I wanted to pursue a career in architecture.

My name is Tatiana Yakou and I am an Assyrian/Iraqi refugee. I was born in Iraq and moved to Australia at the age of 8. Throughout my school years, I was always confused about what I wanted to do/be when I grew up and I still question that to this day. One of the subjects that I really enjoyed in school was design and technology. Although I cannot draw and I do not enjoy it as much as I should, It was the idea of thinking creatively, being different and showing your persona through designs and working with others for me. As I got to year 12, I was stuck between fashion and architecture. As I thought about it in the long term and my future, I knew architecture was the one for me and one I could see myself doing and enjoying in a few years time. I still have my doubts about it sometimes but it is still early stages of my career and I believe I need to learn more, enhance my skills and experience new things to be able to love what I do and really enjoy it. I have still got a long way to go and I am determined to make it worth while.

Greetings, I am William Clinton, I am 22 years old and want to change the ways in which people see and use architecture. Architecture to me is the most useful expression of art and should be treated accordingly. Growing up in the country I believe that architecture should complement nature and its immediate surroundings. Architecture and nature should work harmoniously together for real beauty to be achieved and that is what I would like my mission in architecture to be. I have been inspired by the work of Australian architect Peter Stutchbury and American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

For me, architecture is a subject which is full of creativities and other elements. The future design institute I plan to work in is back in my hometown. In my mind, I should be more interested in Asian style architecture because that is where I was born.

My design approach of the model is combined with the typical design arrangements of the ancient Roman villa, the principles of the ‘Y house’ designed by Steven Holl and my own geometric morphology that I have researched. For this project, I aimed to design a modern Roman villa which contains my own geometric morphology and the ‘Y house’ contexts.
